What is the NRI Program?

A Non-Resident Importer (NRI) is an organization located outside of Canada that ships goods to customers, retailers, and businesses in Canada and assumes responsibility for customs clearance and other import-related requirements.

Before importing commercial goods, as a business or an individual, you will need to obtain a Business Number (BN) issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Apply Below for NRI BN and Brokerage.

Note: Amazon, Costco, Walmart are generally companies that will NOT act as the Importer of Record (IOR), unless previously negotiated with the seller/shipper. Therefore, the shipper would become the NRI and assume all requirements.

NRI Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the complete declaration of all shipments made in their name.
  • Pay for any applicable duties, taxes, and brokerage fees.
  • Responsible for GST Registration and quarterly filing (inquire for more information).
  • Maintain importing records for six years plus the current year.

What is a Brokerage account?

Authorized agent/agency that clears shipments on your company’s behalf – customs clearance. Although importers may use an agent to perform business with the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency), the importer is responsible for the accounting documentation, payment of duties and taxes, classification, origin, and valuation of goods.

Important notice for Off-Shore Customers (outside of USA/Canada/Mexico):

Please be advised, as an off-shore customer CBSA requires your books and records to be maintained by a lawyer, accountant, customs brokers, or another financial institution in case of an audit. If you have electronic records only, the server must be in Canada, the USA, or Mexico. The address of the server would be recorded in the Records section (this form is in the final set we will provide).  NOTE: Neither UPS nor Frisbi provides this service. *  Read More.

Thing to know before Applying:

  • Request Information from our Team prior to applying in the event you may already have an NRI (non-resident importer business number) and Canadian Brokerage Account.
  • UPS will be your customer clearance broker (for parcel and palletized shipments). They will prepare and file all legal documents on your company’s behalf.
  • Frisbi will advise when account activation is complete.

Please note, all application information has to be filled out completely and correctly. If you have any questions, please inquire with support@frisbi.com or your account representative. Once the initial form is filed with UPS any changes thereafter may be your responsibility to amend with CRA (Canada Revenue Agency).

If you already have a Canadian NRI Business Number, please apply for Brokerage Only. *
